11 Best Foil Cardstock

*This post may contain affiliate links. Please see my disclosure to learn more.

If you remember one thing from this page, make it weight. Thin foil cardstock creases when you fold it and shows every fingerprint, and no amount of shine makes up for that. For a card base or a scrapbook background I want something heavy, up around 250 gsm or more; the light stuff is for fine details and accents. Color is the part most people start with, and it is the part that matters least.

So, what is the best foil cardstock? The best foil cardstock for your project depends on a few different factors, including weight, size, design, and finish, but in general, look for cardstock that has a high-quality finish which won’t rub off or become dull over time.

In this article, we will introduce you to popular foil cardstocks that you can use in your craft projects. Let’s learn more about them below.

Buyer’s Guide

Foil cardstock usually has a reflective foil side with a paper stock backing. This is very different from foil, which is very thin metal leaves that are normally used in heat printing to add reflective details to an artwork.

Buying foil cardstock is very similar to buying any other kind of cardstock – you have to pay attention to the weight of the paper, size, design, and finish. Let’s take a look at them below.

1. Cardstock GSM

Cardstock has a “grams per square meter” (gsm) indicator that tells you how lightweight or heavy the cardstock is. The lightest paper has a weight of 35 to 55 gsm, while heavier cardstock has a weight range from 350-450 gsm.

Depending on your project, you may want to buy the proper weight necessary for your cardstock. Keep in mind that the thicker papers can work best as a background for an entire card or as a material for paper projects that require more structure, while the lighter papers work well to add fine details to a card or a page in your scrapbook.

The weight of the cardstock paper will also decide whether it will work with die-cutting machines. If you have a die-cutting machine or clicker press at home, you should take a look and the cardstock weight that the machine allows.

2. Foil Finish

Foil cardstock has a very similar appearance to foil, but thanks to the cardstock backing, it is as thick as regular cardstock, which makes it easier to work with, especially for scrapbooking or card-making

There are mainly two types of foil cardstock: Matte and Mirror, and they are mainly different in terms of how reflective they are.

Matte foil cardstock is definitely not matte in the traditional sense – it is still shiny to a certain degree. Matte foil cardstock still has a metallic quality to it, but it doesn’t reflect light. Matte cardstock is often used to add beautiful, elegant edges to a page or as accent pieces in a scrapbook or a card.

In comparison, mirror foil cardstock can actually reflect light and produce reflections, thanks to its mirror quality. Mirror foil cardstock is often used as a fun detail in a scrapbook project or as a dramatic background for a Christmas card.

3. Use

Do you want to write or print on your foil cardstock paper? Certain types of smooth foil cardstocks allow you to write or print easily on the paper, while other types of textured cardstock may be difficult to write on – it simply won’t hold the ink very well.

If you want to write on your foil cardstock, it’s worth thinking about the color of the foil cardstock as well. Some colors allow you to highlight the writing, while others won’t allow you to show anything that is printed or written on the paper. Choosing the right foil cardstock for your design will really help you highlight the design.

4. Size

Card stock comes in many different sizes, most commonly A4 (11″ by 8.5″) or square sizes like 6″ by 6″. The size is especially important if you want to create a background for an entire page in your scrapbook or to use as the base for a DIY invitation or card.

While the 11″ by 8.5″ is surely the most versatile, square sizes are also beneficial if you want to create smaller cards or fine details in your design.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is foil cardstock?

Foil cardstock has a reflective foil side and a paper stock backing. That backing is what separates it from craft foil, which is a very thin metal leaf used in heat printing to add reflective detail to artwork.

What is the difference between matte and mirror foil cardstock?

Mirror foil cardstock reflects light and throws a real reflection, so it works as a dramatic background or as a fun detail in a scrapbook project. Matte foil cardstock keeps the metallic quality but does not bounce light back, which suits elegant edging and accent pieces. Matte is still shiny to a degree, just without the reflection.

What gsm should foil cardstock be?

It depends on the project. The lightest papers run 35 to 55 gsm and suit fine details on a card or a scrapbook page, while heavier stock runs 350 to 450 gsm and holds up as a full card base or anywhere you need structure. Check your die cutting machine first, because the weight of the paper decides whether it will feed.

Can you write or print on foil cardstock?

On the smooth types, yes. Textured foil cardstock is harder to write on because it will not hold the ink very well. Color matters too. Some shades make writing stand out and others swallow it, so think about legibility before you pick a sheet you plan to print on.

What size does foil cardstock come in?

Most commonly A4, which is 11 by 8.5 inches, and square sizes such as 6 by 6 inches. The 11 by 8.5 inch sheet is the most versatile of the two, and squares are handy for smaller cards or for fine details in a design.
