Scratch Art For Adults: 7 Kits And Books

*This post may contain affiliate links. Please see my disclosure to learn more.

Scratch art starts with a coated board or page. Drag a stylus across the surface and color or foil appears underneath. Some kits give you an outline to follow; others leave the design up to you.

For a first project, choose a picture you actually want to finish and check that the kit includes a stylus. A large pack is useful if you already enjoy the activity, but you do not need eight designs or a bag of specialist tools to try it.

The options below cover city scenes, animals, trace-along books, mandalas and freehand boards. Product descriptions and availability were checked on October 11, 2026. Confirm the selected design and pack contents before ordering, since variants can change.

Choosing A Format

Guided boards work like tracing: remove the marked areas and leave the rest of the coating in place. Check the actual design photos, not just a label such as “America Series.” Look for pictures whose smallest lines you will be comfortable following.

Books keep the pages together and often combine scratch designs with other activities. Compare the number of scratch pages separately from the total page count. A 36-page book does not necessarily contain 36 pictures to scratch.

Blank boards let you draw lettering, textures or your own picture. They are a useful choice if following a printed outline sounds less appealing than making the design yourself.

Seven Options To Consider

1. Two-city landmark kit

Two-city landmark kit

This two-board pack features the Eiffel Tower and Big Ben. The current listing includes a scratch pen, two wooden styluses and a cleaning brush. It is a smaller commitment than an eight-board set if you want to try a couple of guided scenes first.

Choose this for the landmarks themselves. A small pack is not automatically easier: the size of the printed details matters more than the number of boards in the box.

2. Niewalda city night-view pack

Niewalda city night-view pack

Niewalda’s city night-view pack includes eight boards measuring about 11.6 by 8.3 inches, described as A4 size. The listed tools are a scraper, cleaning brush, scratch pen and wooden stylus.

This gives you several separate projects in one pack. Check the current design photos before buying, especially if you want a particular landmark; the theme name alone does not confirm every picture.

3. MIASTAR eight-board travel kit

MIASTAR eight-board travel kit

The MIASTAR pack combines eight travel-inspired boards with a scratch pen, scraper, brush, two wooden styluses and a tool bag. The listed board size is approximately 11.6 by 8.3 inches.

The pouch is useful for storing the tools between sessions. The current pack description does not list repair fluid, so do not buy it expecting the correction product described in older versions of this guide.

4. BOTEEN animal-series kit

BOTEEN animal-series kit

This BOTEEN set switches the subject from buildings to animals. Its current listing describes eight boards with a wooden stylus, scraper, scratch pen and brush.

Look through the pictured animals and the detail in each outline before choosing it. More designs give you more projects, but they do not establish how easy the pictures will be to finish.

5. Scratch & Sketch Extreme

Scratch & Sketch Extreme

Scratch & Sketch Extreme is a bound trace-along activity book. The current description lists 20 black-coated scratch pages, with foil or colorful backgrounds, plus coloring images and extra paper for your own drawing. A wooden stylus is included.

It is marketed for ages 8 and up. Adults who like detailed trace-along pictures may still enjoy the format, but it is a children’s activity book rather than an adult-only art kit. Check the sample illustrations if that distinction matters to you.

6. Mandalas for Meditation: Scratch-Off NightScapes

Mandalas for Meditation: Scratch-Off NightScapes

This book is for someone who prefers circular mandala patterns to city views or animals. Scratching the marked lines reveals multicolored backgrounds, and a stylus is included.

The publisher lists 36 pages. That is the book’s total page count, not a promise of 36 scratch designs. Choose it for the mandala artwork rather than the largest possible number of projects.

7. Marvin’s Magic Super Bright Scratch Art

Marvin’s Magic offers a different starting point: a pack of 36 boards with assorted foil, holographic, neon and rainbow finishes, plus four wooden styluses. Use them for freehand pictures, lettering or cards rather than following a detailed city scene.

The pack is marketed for ages 5 and up. It can also suit an adult who wants simple boards for experimenting, but it is not a set of intricate adult-only designs. Check the board sizes and finish assortment against the project you have in mind.

Tools And A First Project

Start with the stylus supplied for the board or book. Extra tools are optional: a fine tip can help with small lines, while a wider scraper clears larger areas. Follow the product’s instructions and keep pointed tools away from young children.

Work on a flat surface with good light. Try a small section first to judge the pressure, then scratch in short strokes rather than digging into the board. Brush away loose coating so you can see the outline clearly.

Scratching is usually irreversible. Do not assume a kit includes correction fluid or that an ordinary marker will match the coating. Test any product-specific correction method on a spare area before using it on the picture.

For a gift, match the format to the recipient: a couple of city scenes for someone curious about the hobby, a larger pack for someone who already enjoys it, or blank boards for someone who would rather draw their own design. Check the board dimensions before adding a frame.
